Lightwood — A Study in Lightness

Developed after the HIROSHIMA Armchair, the first chair designed by Naoto Fukasawa for the MARUNI COLLECTION, Lightwood marked a different expression of MARUNI’s collaboration with Jasper Morrison, which began in 2009. While HIROSHIMA is known for its sculpted form and generous comfort, Lightwood explores a lightweight wooden structure reduced to the minimum without surrendering comfort.

The joints of the Lightwood chair are among its most distinctive features. To ensure strength, the three-finger joint is reinforced with concealed dowels, combining beauty, lightness, and resilience through MARUNI’s woodworking knowledge and technology.

Jasper first chose white mesh as the seating material, allowing the chair’s structure to remain visible. The collection later expanded to include webbing, followed by cushioned versions with a wide range of textile and leather options, each designed for easy upholstery replacement. These variations expand the chair’s versatility while remaining true to the original concept of lightness and comfort.

With its slender frame, visually light structure, and carefully balanced proportions, Lightwood brings a quiet sense of openness to everyday spaces. Its lightness is not only structural, but also visual — allowing the chair to sit naturally in a wide range of interiors.
