This is the story of Japanese Craftsmanship Spirits:
Onta-yaki

ONTAYAKI

Source: Mingei Okumura

Onta-yaki is a type of Japanese pottery produced in a remote village in the mountainous area of Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. Techniques, such as chattering, brush stroke patterns, and combing characterize the Onta-yaki pottery.

Bernard Leach – the father of British studio pottery – greatly appreciated this art of pottery making and the village. The potters grind the clay with Kara-Usu, the clay grinder, using the water flowing in the river. You will surely be enchanted by the scenic beauty of the village and the sound of Kara-Usu grinding the clay.

Currently, only ten kilns are operating in the village. The families that run the kilns have passed down the pottery techniques from generation to generation. The eldest son in the family inherits it. No family takes in disciples from outside. This is one of the reasons why the original techniques have been well preserved since 1600 AD.

The potters still follow the rules of Onta-yaki. They collect soil jointly and refrain from putting personal signatures on their works. These unique rules have helped to successfully preserve the tradition, quality, and image of Onta-yaki.
