HIROSHIMA Armchair — Refined in Form

The HIROSHIMA Armchair was born in 2008 from the encounter between Naoto Fukasawa and Maruni’s woodworking tradition in Hiroshima, Japan. At the time of its release, Fukasawa reflected, “I always wanted to design a fine wooden chair that would age with grace through daily use.” What began as a foam prototype marked the starting point of a chair conceived not as an object of trend, but as a lasting presence in everyday life.

From the outset, the design was rooted in the careful observation of human behavior — how we sit, rest our arms, or rise without thinking. The form developed through a deep understanding of material, structure, and proportion, guided by the belief that a chair should feel natural before it is consciously appreciated.

The sculpted back and arms, carved from solid wood, reveal a continuous flow of three-dimensional curves that appear effortless yet require exceptional precision. Maruni craftsmen produced numerous prototypes, refining subtle details through repeated testing and trusting their own intuition and experience cultivated over decades.

Today, the HIROSHIMA Armchair is available in 29 countries across 89 stores worldwide. While its presence has expanded globally, its essence remains unchanged: a chair created to provide quiet comfort, careful craftsmanship, and a presence that deepens through daily use.
