This is the story of Japanese Craftsmanship Spirits:
Bizen Yaki (Bizen Pottery)

Bizen

Artist: Yasuhiro Ishida

The unvarnished texture and unglazed simplicity are the attractive characteristics of Bizen Yaki - pottery made in the Bizen area of Okayama prefecture. The fine-grained and sticky clay indigenous to the Bizen region are mined from the bottom of rice fields during winter. The clay contains plenty of iron and is of high quality required to produce the beautiful Bizen pottery. Traditionally, once shaped, Bizen pottery is thoroughly baked for 10 days using red pine wood as fuel.

Bizen Yaki is made in one of the 6 ancient kilns, and its roots date back to the Kofun period (300-538AD). During the Muromachi Period (1338-1573) when tea ceremony flourished, Bizen pottery with its natural simplicity were loved by tea ceremony masters and many tea utensils were made based on the art. The quaint Bizen style of wabi-sabi is loved by many.

Today, in addition to traditional styles, artists and potters continue to make unique works one by one. Each Bizen ware changes its color depending on how it hits the flame and how the ash gets sprinkled on it. The precise structure and micro bubbles on the Bizen ware are said to keep your cup of tea nice and warm or your beer and wine crispy cold and delicious for a long period of time.
