Japanese manufacturing is known to be attentive to every detail, and suitcases are no exception. In the late 19th century, during Japan’s Meiji restoration period, suitcases were introduced to the country as part of its adoption of Western customs and products. These early suitcases were horizontal like trunks and had only handles. It was a Japanese company that innovated by adding wheels to horizontal suitcases, a concept inspired by a customer’s request.

A Japanese company also pioneered the adoption of vertical-shaped suitcases with four wheels. Other inventive ideas prioritizing user convenience include features like expandable compartments, ergonomic handles, silent and smooth-rolling casters, and more. In addition, Japanese suitcases often exhibit a harmonious blend of form and function, appealing not only to practicality but also to aesthetics.

The evolution of suitcase manufacturing has been marked by the introduction of innovative materials, each contributing to the development of more advanced and eco-friendly products. Recycled materials, reflecting the growing demand for sustainability, are also being integrated into these products. These ongoing improvements and strong commitment to creativity result in tools designed to make your journey as comfortable as possible.

Maruni’s iconic HIROSHIMA Armchair now shows a new look with the introduction of a new material, ash. Given the continuous shortage of oak wood, which had been the chair’s most favored material, Maruni has been seeking for new materials that would elevate the chair’s intrinsic value. Taking full advantage of the unique property of the material that can transform to different expressions, the chair in ash wood is also available in different colorways, dark brown and black.

The chair designer Naoto Fukasawa explains: “The white wood has a serene Nordic aesthetic, while the bold grain stands out distinctly when painted deep, dark brown, giving it a mysterious charm. Much like antique furniture that is passed down from generation to generation, ash wood has the potential to become a classic choice”.
